Taking Facebook Targeted Advertising to the extreme

SWIFTCOVERWow now I’m not easily surprised however, when you see a Facebook Advert directed to a village you have to be amazed. Now I can’t say at this early stage if this is likely to be a success but what I can say is they have some guts for trying it.

Well done Swiftcover.

What’s really special about this is that if you clink the link you are directed to a location specific landing page on Facebook.

Have you seen any heavily targeted Social Media Advertising recently?

LinkedIn Contacts could be the missing CRM element we have been waiting for

Although invite only, and not available in the UK – Yet. LinkedIn Contacts has the potential to disrupt the hosted CRM (Customer Relationship Management) market. It was only recently that I mentioned to a business contact how LinkedIn was missing that key CRM element that would keep me logged into it all day long. Of course LinkedIn are smart and were well aware of this before it even appeared on my radar. Their Acquisition of the technology from Connected back in 2011 proves it.

LinkedIn ContactsKeeping LinkedIn users logged in all day has two advantages for LinkedIn’s long-term survival. Firstly they can advertise to us more. Love it or hate it Social Advertising is here to stay. Personally I have no problem with it. Secondly, if we come to rely on LinkedIn for CRM, we are much more likely to want to pay for it. WIN – WIN for LinkedIn and WIN – WIN for consumers.

At JRSM we are gagging to get our hands on it but will have to wait however, we have signed up for early access and once we have it we will thoroughly test it and post a video review too – We’re good like that!

In the meantime why not try to get early access yourself. Simply head over to the LinkedIn Contacts and sign up.

What CRM do you use? What would LinkedIn Contacts need to do to temp you away from your current preferred supplier?

You don’t want to be the person that supported the Blockbuster decision

Quickly spring clean your Twitter account

ManagFlitter logoWhether your time on Twitter is for personal or business use, you will want to keep it an enjoyable one. free from spam, broadcasters who never listen, infrequent tweeters and abusive accounts. Now you can do it manually and there is nothing wrong with that, or your can use my favourite tool for cleaning up Twitter accounts, ManageFlitter. You can use it for free too if your patient!

Access to Manageflitter does not require payment details, and being a bit tight with cash, I love that. Simply connect using your Twitter account credentials. You can also use it with more than one account. Still without spending a penny – superb!

Once logged in you have access to many free features however, you are restricted to how many actions you can keep. This can be increased by following @ManageFlitter on Twitter and tweeting about using the service. Do it! it’s worth the extra actions if you have a large account.

Manageflitter Screen shot

Free features include Not Following Back, No Profile Image, Fake Following, Non-English, High Ratio, Inactive, Talkative, Quiet & Everyone you follow. Other feature are only available on the Pro Versions, of which there are four.

Personally I only use a handful of the features. Without a doubt the most useful is “Not Following Back”. It’s exact, easy to use and with the “fast select feature”, very easy to use.

Some advice for cleaning your Twitter account using “Not Following Back”. Always sort the order so that you are un-following the oldest accounts first. Twitter will get suspicious and suspend your account if you are following and un-following accounts within days. Trust me. I learnt that the hard way.

So that’s Manageflitter. A great tool for anyone wanting to keep their Twitter house in-order. Now go and play!

Give it a go and let me know what you think?

Do you use any other tools for keeping your Social Media accounts tidy?

Pin-it button coming to mobile apps

Image of red pinFor all of us who love Pinterest, hot off the press, the ability to pin-it from mobile apps is coming very soon. It’s well overdue and will make Pinterest more ingrained into the mobile experience. How it will be delivered is anyone’s guess, however if we look at what Pinterest has done lately, I think we can assume it will be done well.

Imagine seeing a lovely image on Tumblr (if it still exists in its current form after Yahoo’s expected acquisition) and just being able to click and “pin to board”! I for one am very excited to try this out sooner than later.

Well done Pinterest.

What do you think of the current Pinterest mobile offering? Does it stand up to the desktop version?

Finally you can mention your friends on Pinterest

Ihave been a huge fan of Pinterest since its launch in September 2011 and since it has developed into a superb Social Media network in it’s own right. All that was missing was the ability to really community build. Thankfully Pinterest have been listening tho their army of fans and have now released the capability to mention friends on Pinterest. Check out the demo video below to learn how.

Social Media security concerns set to hound innovation for a while yet

We don’t seem to have moved far in terms of how we manage personal security issues with Social Media. With Google Glass in beta testing and the promise of integrated Social Media activities, Social Media will once again become the whipping boy for online security.  It’s a strange time and 10 years from now it will all be irrelevant (I hope…..).

I recently came  across this video from Playgroundlabs and felt he cold chill of the online security naysayers ganging up to ban Google Glass from the planet.

Should we worry, or is this just the next evolution of communications technology?

Lies, damned lies, and statistics

Facebook expected to be in use by 60 percent

There’s lots of buzz in the media about Facebook’s hold on our attention waning. However, Emarketer have just released their latest figures and claim that Facebook is expected to be used by 60% of those with internet access by the end of the year. Whether you love Statistics or not, there is no denying that Social Media statistics seem very popular with them being spouted by journalists daily. We can assume that with the buzz around Google+, LinkedIn, Yahoo and Facebook and their many acquisitions of late, that this is only the start (Dot-com bubble burst anyone?).

Since Marissa Mayer started with Yahoo they have made 10 high profile acquisitions of startups. Facebook’s recent acquisition of Waze just hit the headlines and not forgetting LinkedIn’s acquisition of Pulse. Great times for start-ups but the jury is out on whether its great times for consumers.

One thing is for sure – Social Media is going to be around for a while yet.

Any other acquisitions got your pulse pumping?

Social media vital in creating ‘employee voice’

bluewhitewidelogoAhuge thanks to Phil @Transolva for alerting us here at JRSM to this article he recently received in an email newsletter.

It seems that the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) are quite sure that employers “Lack of understanding and a resistance to embracing social media” is holding there businesses back. They are warning employers that by not embracing Social Media they risk losing out to their competitors.

The CPD state “building trust amongst the work force, creating a culture of openness, collaboration and innovation are all suffering as a result of employers’ fearing social media”.

Although here at JRSM we agree in principle, we also feel that the move to becoming a “Social Business” should be a stepped one, that is carefully thought out, and delivered in a way that reduces the negative impact of change whilst maximising the positive behaviours Social Media can cultivate and embed within an organisation.

The CIPD cited the biggest barriers to embracing social media as:

  • a lack of understanding of how Social Media works
  • a lack of awareness of the data it can generate
  • a fear of a more open approach

Jonny Gifford, research adviser at the CIPD, said “employers should also be thinking hard about the opportunity social media gives them to simultaneously collect opinions and facilitate discussion about genuine opinions and ideas, and to analyse the data in rich and meaningful ways.”

Do you agree with the CPD about the barriers to Social Media adoption?

Could your business use it as a way of improving internal communications?
